What Is a Social Casino?

A social casino is a site or app where you play casino games like blackjack, roulette, poker and slots with free virtual chips instead of money. You can't cash the chips out and there are no real prizes; you play for fun, for the leaderboard and for the company of other players. Many social casinos make money by selling extra chips. House21 doesn't sell anything.

How a social casino works

The games are the same ones you'd find in a casino. A blackjack hand at a social casino is dealt and paid the same way as anywhere else. What changes is what's at stake:

  • Virtual chips. You get a balance when you sign up and top it up through bonuses, missions and rewards.
  • No cash out. Chips can't be exchanged for money, gift cards or anything else.
  • Progress instead of profit. Levels, leaderboards, leagues, tournaments and collectibles give each session a point.
  • Other people. Most social casinos are built around playing alongside others: shared tables, chat, friends and gifts.

Social casino vs real-money casino vs sweepstakes casino

Three kinds of sites can look almost identical. The difference is what you can win.

Social casino Sweepstakes casino Real-money casino
What you play with Virtual chips or coins only Two currencies: free coins, plus "sweeps coins" Money
Can you win money or prizes? No Yes, sweeps coins can be redeemed for prizes, including cash Yes
Can you buy currency? Often (not at House21) Coins can be bought; sweeps coins usually come as a bonus with them You deposit money
Licensed as gambling? Generally not, because nothing of value can be won Generally not, under sweepstakes rules, though several places now restrict them Yes

Sweepstakes casinos are a separate model: they're built to award real prizes without being classed as gambling, and their legal status is contested and changing. A pure social casino, where nothing can ever be redeemed, avoids that question entirely.

Is a social casino gambling?

Usually not, because gambling needs three things: a stake, chance, and a prize of value. A social casino has chance but no real prize.

The line isn't always clean, though. In 2018 a US federal appeals court ruled in Kater v. Churchill Downs that the virtual chips sold in the Big Fish Casino app counted as a "thing of value" under Washington state law, because players needed them to keep playing and had to buy more when they ran out (Klein Moynihan Turco). The companies behind it later agreed to pay $155 million to settle that case and a related one (Womble Bond Dickinson).

House21 stays clear of that question by selling nothing: every chip is free, and when you run low, more free chips are available.

Why play for free?

To learn without paying for mistakes. Basic strategy in blackjack only feels natural after a few hundred hands. Hold'em takes longer. A free table is where those first thousand decisions should happen.

For the game itself. A blackjack table where everyone cheers a dealer bust, or a poker hand that comes down to the river, is fun whatever the chips are worth.

To test ideas safely. Curious whether a roulette system works? We tested six, but you can watch one play out yourself without losing anything real.

Because the odds are honest. The games use the same rules as real casinos, so what you learn transfers. Our guide to which game has the best odds compares all three.

What a good social casino should do

  • Use real rules and fair shuffles. You should be able to read the rules, and the results should match the math over time. Is online blackjack rigged? explains what to check.
  • Make it clear nothing can be won. No hints that chips might be worth something someday.
  • Keep play in proportion. Free games still use the same psychology as real ones; why "one more hand" is hard to resist is worth a read. Look for breaks, limits and a responsible gaming page.
  • Be honest about the business. If a site sells chips, the price should be clear and buying should never be required to keep playing.
  • Be adults only. Social casinos are designed for players 18 and over.

Common questions

Are social casino games rigged to make you lose? They shouldn't be, and at House21 the cards and the wheel use a cryptographically secure random source. Any site that rigged results would just make players leave.

Can I win real money at a social casino? No. If a site offers cash prizes, it's a sweepstakes or real-money casino, not a social casino.

Do I need to pay anything at House21? No. There's nothing to buy. Everything, including poker buy-ins and roulette chips, uses the same free balance.

Is it legal? Social casinos operate legally in many countries because nothing of value can be won, but rules differ by country and change over time.

Pull up a chair at a blackjack, roulette or Texas Hold'em table in the lobby. All three run on the same free chips.
